Do you think that oil pipelines are a wise investment?

Oil Pipelines

The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline is the latest in a long series of pipelines carrying oil either to ports for onward transport by ship or to the countries where the oil is to be used. It is a huge and expensive project, a worthy successor to the grand designs of the Victorians. But are huge projects to extract or access non-renewable energy sources the way of the future?

Oil will soon run out; should we not be spending all our energy investment money on projects which would allow us to take advantage of renewable energy resources? As oil becomes more and more expensive to extract, and oil-based economies struggle, there will probably be less and less money to spare for investment in alternative energy.

Only a few countries have oil; if most other countries continue to rely on oil then the lucky few will be able to charge whatever price they like, and as supplies get shorter there would be an ever greater likelihood of more oil wars.

Within each oil country, the riches from oil often accrue to only a few. Often the ordinary people, who may have to put up with disruption and pollution, do not get to share in the wealth of their land, and the huge gap between rich and poor results in all kinds of injustices.

Oil wells tend to be concentrated into relatively small areas, making it relatively easy for them to be sabotaged - for example during the invasion of Kuwait. Pipelines are long and thin and often go through areas where there is strife. Security costs can be very high. As well as sabotage, accidents can happen causing serious pollution. Pollution can also occur at sea; at ports, at oil wells, and where tankers have accidents.

Long supply chains, whether oil pipelines, shipping lanes, or electricity grids, can suffer considerable losses. The new Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline alone will contain several months' worth of oil. Would it not be better to generate power much more locally, rather than put all our eggs in very few baskets?

First Pipeline From Caspian Sea Opened

A new pipeline, the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline, has begun carrying oil from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean port of Ceyhan, Turkey. The pipeline will reduce the West's dependence on Middle East oil and on Russian pipelines. It does not avoid areas of conflict, however, so security will be an issue. It will be some months before the pipeline becomes full and there can be deliveries to tankers.
